Microsoft announced on Monday (Sep 21, 2020) the purchase of ZeniMax Media for $7.5 Billion. ZeniMax Media Inc. is an American video game holding company based in Rockville, Maryland, and founded in 1999. The company owns many accomplished creative studios around world, including Bethesda Softworks (developer of Fallout, The Elder Scrolls series), id Software (developer of Doom, Rage series), MachineGames (developer of Wolfenstein series), Arkane Studios (developer of Dishonored series and Prey) and ZeniMax Online Studios (developer of The Elder Scrolls Online).
Here’s what Phil Spencer has to say about Bethesda:
Just as they took the bold first steps to bring The Elder Scrolls franchise to the original Xbox, Bethesda were early supporters of Xbox Game Pass, bringing their games to new audiences across devices and have been actively investing in new gaming technology like cloud streaming of games. We will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC. One of the things that has me most excited is seeing the roadmap with Bethesda’s future games, some announced and many unannounced, to Xbox console and PC including Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios.– Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox
Here’s the updated roster of in-house studios under Xbox Game Studios:
This has to be the biggest company acquisition within the game industry. Xbox gamers have another reason to get Game Pass. I can’t wait to hear more announcements about the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. I am sure Microsoft will be adding Bethesda’s catalog of hit games to Game Pass.
